A traditional Hungarian fried flatbread, often enjoyed as a street food, topped with various ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 500 grams all-purpose flour
  • 250 milliliters warm water
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • oil for frying
  • optional garlic, cheese, or toppings of choice

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it stand for 10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well and add the yeast mixture and sour cream.
  3. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic. Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  4. Punch down the dough and divide it into equal portions. Roll each portion into a flat circle.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Fry the dough circles until golden brown on both sides.
  6. Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve warm with garlic, cheese or toppings as desired.

Notes

  • For a crispier texture, let the dough rest for an additional 30 minutes before frying.
  • Experiment with toppings for different flavor profiles.
